Fame Lab

December 17, 2016August 3, 2018Leave a comment

I had a great time participating in British Council sponsored Fame Lab when it came to Dundee Uni. Fame Lab is an international science public engagement competition, in which competitors have 3 minutes to present their research to a general audience.

My presentation was entitled ‘How to become a leader in 3 easy steps’ (yes there is a science to it!).  If Revealing Research at the university ever give me a copy of my talk, I will post it to see whether you think it will inspire us to create a new generation of leaders!

‘I’m a Scientist, Get Me Out of Here!’

I was recently chosen to participate in a national public engagement competition. This Wellcome Trust sponsored programme recruited scientists from around the country to discuss their work with primary and secondary school children. I was placed in the ‘relationships zone’ and along with 4 other psychologists, we discussed our work (and everything else under the sun!) with the students. The students came up with some thoughtful and insightful questions, and I learned a great deal not only from them, but the other psychologists too!

Cafe Science

I was recently invited to present a talk entitled ‘Understanding Teenage Mental Health’ at our local branch of Cafe Science. Cafe Science is an offshoot of the international organisation, Cafe Scientifique, which aims to provide science research to the general public in a relaxed and informal setting.

Our local branch is linked to the University of Dundee, Abertay University, and Dundee Science Centre.

My talk was based on my PhD research and focused on the current mental health crisis facing young people, and how we could best address this utilising the power of social groups.

I greatly appreciated the opportunity to speak to such a diverse and engaged audience, and felt that I learned as much from my audience as they did from me!

Thank you again to the organisers of the event, and the Science Centre, for hosting us.
